Razor Edge Pitbull: Are They The Friendliest Pitbull Bloodline?

Not a lot of people know that when it comes to Pitbulls, this dog breed comes in various shapes, sizes, and bloodlines. In this article, we will learn more about one of their friendliest bloodlines – the Razor Edge Pitbull.

Contrary to popular Pitbull misconceptions, Razor Edge Pitbulls were bred to become companion dogs. They aren’t meant to be put in competition or, worse, engage in dog fights.

Their traits were carefully handpicked to produce the best temperament. And although they are not 100% Pitbulls and are often mixed with Mastiff or English Bulldogs, these dogs are recognized as American Bullies but with quite a few exceptions.

What Is a Razor Edge Pitbull?

Razor Edge Pitbulls are selectively bred for one purpose, to serve as family companions. Since their bloodline is usually mixed with a Mastiff or American Bully, you will find their temperament better than the normal Pitbull or Bully. These Pitties are known for their social skills and gentle demeanor.

These dogs are healthy, short, muscular, and packed with particular traits that Razor Pitbulls should possess.

It can often be hard to identify Pitbulls from one another and categorize them according to bloodlines, especially since they mostly look the same.

But in this article, the spotlight will be on Razor Edge Pitbulls and how they stand out from the rest.

History and Origin: Where Do Razor Edge Pitbulls Come From?

The Razor Edge Pitbull bloodline started when Dave Wilson and Carlos Barksdale decided on creating a dog breed with specific characteristics. The duo wanted the muscularity, size, and substance of the original Pitbull paired with the Staffordshire Terrier’s gentle demeanor.

They started researching and reading about anything that pertains to these breeds. Eventually, they began purchasing some of the best game dogs across America.

In the end, they were able to reach out to George Williams from Washington DC, who sold them “Diablo” whose size and structure was exactly what they were looking for to include in the program. Little did they know that “Diablo” would be the start of the Razor Edge Pitbull bloodline.

However, some kennel clubs do not consider Razor Edge Pitbull as a pure APBT breed, given the fact that they are mixed with other breeds. But this does not discourage people from wanting to own a Razor Edge Pitbull.

Razor Edge Pitbull Appearance

Often, Pitbulls can look similar to each other regardless of their bloodline. Those who are not well educated about Pitbulls won’t be able to tell them apart. But people who are more experienced can see the difference no matter how subtle.

Head

Razor Edge Pitbulls have more oversized heads and a smaller muzzle compared to the average Pitbull.

They have naturally pointy ears that can be left just the way it is or cropped, depending on the owner’s preference. Their noses should be the same color as their coats.

Build

The Razor Edge Pitbull has an outstanding build. They are generally more robust and more muscular than normal Pitbulls.

They have a broad chest area, which makes them look bulkier, but their back tends to be shorter and their legs more compact.

Coat

As for their coat, this breed is low shedding, which means that you won’t have a problem with dog hair scattered around the house.

They are definitely easier to manage as they require very little attention in the grooming department. Their coats also come in different colors.

Razor Edge Pitbull Health Concerns

Razor Edge Pitbulls are generally healthy. However, this does not mean that they are spared from common health problems associated with their breed.

Hip Dysplasia

This is a common skeletal disease in dogs and could directly affect their quality of life, especially if left undiagnosed and untreated. Pitbulls are usually prone to this condition because of their active lifestyle and weight.

To avoid early-onset, your dog needs to have an x-ray done after turning two to make sure that they are fit and well. A yearly check-up will then be required after.

Hypothyroidism

A dog’s thyroid gland is responsible for producing a hormone called “thyroxine,” which controls its metabolism. Pitbulls with hyperthyroidism means that the dogs are not stimulating this hormone.

Symptoms like hair loss, intolerance to the cold, muscle loss, black patches on the skin, dull coat, and flakiness might signify that your dog has hyperthyroidism. The good news is that this can easily be managed with the right medication and is rarely life-threatening.

Cataracts

Several factors cause this eye disease. It may be due to old age, trauma on the eyes, or diabetes. More frequently, cataracts are caused by a genetic disorder. The eye’s cloudiness and thickening may lead to blurred vision, glaucoma, or even blindness if left untreated.

Heart Disease

Pitbulls are prone to heart disease. They can either have congenital heart disease from when they were born or develop heart murmur and irregular heart rhythm as they age.

Veterinary clinics can perform echocardiograms or x-ray to see if your dog might be suffering from irregularities.

Razor Edge Pitbull Temperament

Despite their massive and quite intimidating appearance, these Pitbulls were bred to have a versatile and non-aggressive behavior.

People might initially assume that they can’t have this type of dog around their children when, in reality, they were created to become the ideal family companion.

Affectionate

Razor Edge Pitbulls are innately affectionate. If they are raised in an environment where they are properly trained, socialized, and cared for, they will grow up to be loyal and devoted dogs. People will be surprised to discover how adoring and playful these dogs are.

Social

These dogs are friendly. They have a high tolerance for children, strangers, and even other animals. They are capable of adapting to new people and environments quite quickly.

This particular trait is another reason why the Razor Edge Bully has increasingly become popular across the US and other countries.

Non-Aggressive

Dave Wilson made sure that the Razor Edge Bloodline will be non-aggressive dogs. They really took time to perfect their temperament to come up with a dog that looks like athletes but is family-oriented.

Of course, they will naturally have their guard dog instincts, but they are also superbly loving.

How to Train Your Razor Edge Pitbull?

The difficulty in training your puppies sometimes depends on what breed they belong to. Some are easy to teach, while some will take a while to follow commands.

When it comes to training a Razor Edge Pitbull, you need to have a lot of patience because they will likely be stubborn. Owners and trainers need to be consistent and firm. But don’t fret. Here are some tips that might help make sure your Razor Pitbull turns out to be a well-behaved dog.

  1. Make it fun for you and for them. These dogs need positive reinforcements instead of harsh and strict training. Because of their need to please their owners, they’ll likely obey quickly if given praises and treats after doing a good job. If you keep this energy steady, training time will be something they’ll look forward to.

  2. Socialize them early on. It’s necessary to expose them to people and other animals during their puppyhood. This exercise will prevent them from being anti-social as they mature. It will also help them recognize the correct way to interact with people, things, and animals.

  3. Patience is key. Like what was mentioned earlier, be patient with training your Razor Bully. Don’t show any sign of frustration because this kind of energy will transfer to your puppy too. You can repeat your sessions until they fully follow commands.

  4. Never shout or scold. This will only incite frustration and fear on your dog. A frustrated and scared dog will have a hard time obeying your commands. Instead, try to keep your spirit high all the time. There’s no such thing as too much praise when it comes to dog training.

Pros and Cons of Getting a Razor Edge Pitbull

If you plan to get a dog, whether it’s a Razor Edge or another breed, there are definitely some advantages and disadvantages. Weighing them puts you in a better position to decide whether you are fully capable of getting and caring for a new pet or in this case, a Razor Edge Pitbull.

Should You Get a Razor Edge Pitbull?

The question still remains, “Should you get a Razor Edge Pitbull?” Let’s go back to our first few statements and look back on why the Razor Edge exists today.

This bloodline was carefully created to produce an athletic and muscular dog with the best temperament. It’s safe to say that Dave Wilson and Carlos Barksdale have succeeded in this plan.

Today, the Razor Edge Pitbull is considered by many families as one of the best choices when picking for an all-around family dog.

If you think you are physically, mentally, emotionally ready to meet its demands, then there’s no reason not to go and get one.

However, if you lack the time, patience, and resources to make sure that your Bully grows up to its maximum potential, then you might as well skip it.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need to be an expert to know that getting a dog is a huge commitment. It’s a big responsibility that one has to embrace fully.

Remember that the Razor Edge Pitbull bloodline was carefully and selectively created. If you’re getting a Razor Edge Pitbull, make sure you’re getting it from a reputable and trustworthy kennel.

Some breeders sell puppies that look like Razor Edge but lack the temperament it should possess. Later on, upset customers end up returning or abandoning these dogs because they do not meet their expectations which is unfair.

But if you’re one of the few who are lucky enough to have a Razor Edge Pitbull in their home, make sure that puppy is loved up fully.
